I was watching sunrise this morning on TV and they had a spokes person from visa on that said as of june they will be fasing out the current credit card system and introducing new credit cards with pin numbers the same way a debit card is used.

Although by june it will not be mandatory in the intrim period, As time progresses it will become of the future.

How will this effect transactions received through ezimerchant if a customer has a pin number attached? as they did not mention if this would effect MOTO transactions?

They are basically talking about the 3D secure system which has been around for years, and the banks have been trying to get everyone to use for just as long. They have tried making it mandatory at least twice in the past that I can remember and they have failed.

So far, they have had very little success (in Australia) in implementing the system. When it was originally released it was hacked together and really didnt work well. The end consumer was left looking at blank screens while there browser redirected them to several different authentication pages making the purchase process even more confusing. I used the system recently and it was still very slow and seemed 'bodgy'. Hopefully they are planning technical improvments to make the process more seamless for the end user.

Payment gateways have also been slow to implement it and the ones that have implemented it have only done so on their hosted payments page solution and not the true XML API based gateways. (and they charge more for it)

I would say there are three main factors as to why its been so slow to get implemented.

1) Cost
2) Lack of end customer education (asking someone to enter their credit cards pin number into a website will stop and make a lot of people think twice about completing the transaction unless they are educated as to why they are being asked for a pin number)
3. Technical implementation - Originally it was really hacky. Even now I dont think its a great design, and only time will tell if webmasters and customers will accept it.

Once the banks make a major push to get end card holders educated about the new pin system gateways and ecommerce solutions will follow.
