We have had our ezimerchant web site up for 6 years and it is long over due for an upgrade, even though we are averaging 550 + page hits and 120+ visitors a day to a specialised site. http://www.engineering-tools.com.au

We started out with about 100 pages and 200 products, but it now has over 1000 pages and well over 4000 products and the site has become messy and outdated.

I want to re-build it using CSS, creating a more attractive site with uniform sized graphics, better navigation etc, etc, etc. I can see that this is going to take several months to complete considering the time slots I have.

The re-design is not a problem in itself. Naturally, it won't be uploaded until I am satisfied that it is finished. But I am a little concerned about whether I am going to run into difficulties viewing the work in progress and causing a conflict with the current site registration. I don't want to make it impossible to keep the current site updated during the re-building period. Changes are made almost daily.

One minute I think it will be okay and a little later I think about it again and have doubts.

I know I have to create and name new Templates - not a problem. But will I be safe by creating new image files and naming them say: images-new?

If you need to keep your current site maintained during the development of the new template/site then I would reccommend you keep them seperate.

That is, install ezimerchant onto a new PC, then restore a backup of your site data onto it - This will get you into the position where you can start to 'update' the site on the new pc (without updating the live webserver) and you can maintain the existing (old) site on the original PC.

When your ready to go live with the new site you simply publish it and then if you want, you can migrate all the data back to the original PC.

Thanks for that David. I can do that, although I had hoped to use our good computer by setting up new files under new names. Obviously that is not a good idea.

By the way, I like the new upgrade of ezimerchant. It has helped to prompt me to do the up-grade to our site.
