Hi, Has anyone had any success with this.

Most of my words (fairly targeted) are being disabled because I am not getting enough hits - problems are they are only getting ~100 impressions during the month - therfore its hard to keep a 3% clickthrough on such a small volume dispite the fact that my words are extremely relevent.

So far I have had over 1000 impressions at the cost of about $100 but 0% conversion.
I have been doing this for a month now and am not sure its really worth while.

Google ranks my site quite highly with the words I am sponsoring so Im at odds as if its worth while.

I believe it is now possible to do conversion tracking w Google adwords and Ezimerchant...that way you can actually see if the clicks result in sales. Obviously if they do it is worthwhile.

google adwords and adsense is working very well for us

the cost to acquire a life time customer being in the region of $18-20

Hi Mark

This is good news - Many customers think Google is to expensive because they look at the amount they spend on any given day vs the amount of sales they get for that day.

What they fail to understand however is that once you have gained a customer they might come back! Its the return custom thats worth gold. :-)

October 2002 through to March 2003 I used ad-words but for 2 years or so I have used ineedhits paid inclusions and for 2003 I used Trellian paid inclusions. Ad-words cost me around the $2,500 mark and during the same period I sold $60,000 worth of GPS. October 2004 and since has seen a massive decline in sales because I have not paid for any ad-words and I susepect I will be lucky to have sold $10,000 for the same period. So, yes it did well for me but I know that paid inclusions is also of benefit as I do receive many orders from other search engines. However, be aware that paid inclusions to hundreds of search engines is not relevant to us in Australia as 90% of them are in USA or Canada etc. Unless you are exporting don't rely on these paid inclusions alone. However, you never know, some unique product that you have may find its way to USA!

It does take a year online to get your site position highly ranked based on content and relevant keywords for each category plus your method of exposing your web site. Example of exposure is finding free inclusions on specific search engine web sites. If in google search you type in free search engine and choose Australian web sites you will find many of the sites that are craving for you to add your web site. A number of them do not ask you to pay at any stage for some higher position etc.

In the past 2 months I have changed the category page meta description from the global to specific keywords and I do believe that has made a big difference in my sales. For example I have USB Christmas decorations on my web site and within one week of adding these products with specific keywords I sold a bundle of them. The same goes for the Digipads, I sold 4 within a week of placing them on the site. In some instances I have also changed Category Page Meta Keywords and i do believe this may be advantageous but will not know until I fiddle around more with my web site.

But I also believe the more professional looking your web site is the more likely it is appealing for people to search through it. Plus, the more variety the more likely someone will find something they want not just what you predominantley sell. The selling of the USB Christmas decorations will undoubtably mean customers returning because they know they can buy other gadgets such as digital cameras, GPS, Plasma TVs etc etc etc.

There are a number of SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) methods or services. I receive a lot of online newsletters on this stuff. webpronews is one of them and I would recommend you do a search on SEO and other items of interest like what bloggs is and how it may assist your site in gaining better position. I have not paid these services a sent I just read what they and their forums have to say. much of it is just people expressing themselves to bet noticed but a portion of it has much valuable information.

You can see how well my site ranks with certain keywords. My favourite is Holux and digitir. Now digitor, as you may be well aware is mainly sold through Dick Smith electronics and yet i rank very well with that keyword.

Sometimes a customer may mispell a word and you may find it a good idea to add some mispellings in your keywords to catch those people. Some products have difficult spelling and those products you should maybe look at adding variations in spelling for.

I also use a search engine called findwhat.com I pay a minimum $50USD and it allows me to see what keywords are most commonly used for a specific word. For example, I sell GPS (Global Positioning Systems) and I would put in their search keyword window *GPS*

This means I want any keyword that surfer has used with the word GPS in it. I may get magellangps or gpsmaggelan for example as top keywords plus it shows the number of times that keyword has been typed in. this way i get to see what the best keywords are but more importantly in google's adwords i can see what words are too general that will most likley cost me a lot of money for no sales. Be somewhat more specific in adwords because surfers who are reay to buy know what keyword they want to use and if you have chosen it then you will get noticed. Again as an example many people want to know what GPS is and they type in GPS.

However a ready to buy customer would type in Magellan GPS or Garmin GPS, which are specific search terms that will give you better resulat.

You can develop keywords further, such as "Garmin GPS76" and anyone that has decided on buying that model is going to find you at the top. Oh, and be price competitive and or have little extras like free freight or some added feature people feel will benefit them.

Avoid generalised words, be more specific in adwords and present your web site in a manner it is easy to peruse and buy.

I apologise for b) the length of the previous reply and b) the spelling mistakes as it was early morning on christmas day.

But on checking your web site ( a very good one at that), bcaroll, I would also suggest that you request links to your site and vice-versa with relevant sites. I am only too willing to ad you to my site in a link exchange situation. Let me know if your interested.

bcarroll on checking your web site again....... the photos you have taken are with products still in their packaging and some are blurred images. i would advise you to find an image or take pics of the models outside of their packaging. You also have no description about each particular model which I think would be of benefit. I also note that you have "wanted" items which probably you could provide a main category for on your main page as opposed to being within a sub category of products for sale.

Your front page has ni images of models, which you do need to make people salivate to the extent they want to look further.


Details of freight issues on the front page is overwhelming. A simple "IMPORTANT - International freight is available and a "more" button like I have on my web site will asist you in getting your message across to these people. you could even place shipping comments on the right hand side just above your "What's New" frame if shipping issues are that important to your customers to know. Even just a text link with "Important International shipping information" in red bold text could ensure these customers know what you need to tell them.

I understand you are targeting dedicated scale model buyers but remember window shopping by a non-scale model customer (random buy) has to be attended to as well. Add a couple of pics on the front page, maybe 5 or so of them and add a "specials" list to the front page.


My web site is massive, the number of products I display on my front page is if more than anything way over the top. However, many people are switching to broadband, thus page upload is very quick. If a web page takes more than 15 seconds to load people tend to move on.


It may even pay to look at powered scale models (remote controlled) because it sells well and adds greater product range to your site. www.dalcon.com.au are importers and distributors of models if your interested.

The fonts used vary noteably, the use of the comic font is a font best suited to sites that are directed at say, mobile phones/ringtones etc to a younger audience. I would gather most of your customers would be homebodies or business. Otherwise I like the idea of the sub product listing on the left hand side if people are lookinhg for a product specifically
