Submitting your site to Google, is easier than other search engines (like Yahoo!) and more likely to get you traffic.
Once you've got your website uploaded and ready, goto the Google Submit Your Site page at http://www.google.com/addurl.html
Put your website address in the URL box; remember it needs to include the http:// at the front! You only need to submit your homepage, Google will find all the other pages on your site automatically.

I would also reccommend the Google Adwords advertising system.
To find out more about the adwords system goto www.google.com then click on the 'Advertise with us' link at the bottom of the page. Then click on 'adwords' link.

Also resist the temptation to use site submission software - google (and most other good search sites) will penalise you for it. Also make sure you add relevant keywords in your meta tags. Sure, if you put a common search term in your meta tags you will get a good search ranking, but people aren't going to click on your link if it isn't what they are looking for. And if they do, it will just be costing you bandwidth.

Getting your website onto a search engine is easy, getting decent rankings is what is hard.
You can do paid placement with Google and the like which no doubt can help if you have a bit of competition. But there are a few other things that will help.
I'd like to think you are all familiar with the importance of meta keywords, these can help a LOT, but sometimes you need to think outside the box. In your keywords do not forget to include common misspellings of your products, or Americanised spelling if applicable ie: "Colored Glasses" and "Coloured Glasss".
Also using slang words for your products in the meta keywords can help someone find you to ie: "Glasses, sunglasses, sunnies, shades"
With the above tips some search engines can be a little funny with keywords and if they actually are featured on your site, so it is advised to try to use them all somewhere if possible.
You can also use your competitors brands in your keywords, but you have to be careful. I understand there was a case in France by a travel agency where someone was using their business name in some pay per click advertising, kinda low you gotta admit, but you can also be sneaky in your site content ie: "You have looked at other sunnies from Oakley, Ray Ban and Calvin Klein, now check out the best we have to offer by DKNY"
Regularly updated content will also help your search engine rankings, having regularly updated news on your site not only gives customers reason for repeat visits (which also helps rankings), it will also be picked up by search engines.
Lastly another biggy that helps with search engines is sites linking to your site. You can setup a reciprocal links page on your site, but make it USEFUL so you get more repeat visitors. The more people you can encourage to link to your site the more it will help with your search engine rankings.
All of these things I have applied to my non-commerce site www.roadstarmagazine.com If you go to google and put in "road star" without the ""'s and nothing else, just road star which is incredibly generic, you will see RoadStarMagazine.com within the top ten hits (usually the top five).
Hope this helps someone.

The BEST way to get a NEW website into google is to NOT submit it. LET google find it.
Get 1 (ONE) text link from 1 (ONE) high profile site, and let google do its thang.

yes, much better that search engine bots will pick up your site.
much better to have a link from a high page rank site since that site is frequently visited by bots.

G'day
sites linking to my website, mmmm, are we talking about affiliate program here?
Im currently with Clixgalore, I just started 4 days ago, and got about 14 visit so far, not many sites has linked (or added my banner) yet...
if you please confirm what you mean by the word (linking)...
Also, if you using adwords, does that mean we will be listed on the normal result? because we are listed in the sponsored links?

Because you sell electronic door stuff, logically you would link to another elctronic devices web site.... like ours :). We would in turn do the same for you, thus link share method, a method that I believe works as well. However, I am not sure as to why we are now peaking middle of the year for traffic (50% increase) compared to even December, which use to be my peak traffic back in 2002 through to 2004. Sales in winter of 2005 was better than Xmas 2004. It is happening again now and suspect that this coming winter will be a bumper!
Might be a seasonal thing as I have links to companies in USA including a fishing and leisure site!
do a google on "free search engine" and start adding your web site to these sites as it is bound to help.

I forgot to mention stats: typical unique count we receive is 400 but peak is at 600 per day. Unique counts are counts that don't come from the same ip within 24 hours. Thus if some stray bot visits your web site a dozen times in one day it only counts as one visit.

Hi
A quick question. How do you do this. What would be a high profile site and how do I get a link into it?
Sorry, I am new to all of this.
Thanks

You will need to find a high profile site - example: Any industry leader in your line of business and get them to place a link to your site on theirs.

Yes I agree. Google adwords is a total must! you still should spend time optimising your website to get the free listings as often people trust these listings more than the sponsored listings. but still i totally believe in google adwords (when the campaigns are done correctly), Will show some very pleasing results. but dont go in blindly like i did when i first started. for a free e-book 85 pages on google adwords, go to my website at this location

Cheers for the e book.
Your site is very fast and looks great.
I have a question...
I had a TLD50 for 7 days until some **** stole it along with xmas presents for family and kids..
Anyway that was long time ago and I need a Game reel for 5-6 foot sharks...
I currently use a Shimano TLD30 as it was all I could afford after the theft but it doesnt hold enough line for some big fellas..
Is the TLD50 the go or would you reccommend something else?
Cost isnt a real issue within reason..
Cheers

MT A Shimano TLD50 fishing reel would deffinately be the better way to go for capacity and line class. the 50 is more suited to 24kg line so you can fish a bit heavier. and obviously yes has more capacity than the TLD30.
Ofcourse you can go the whole hog into a shimano tiagra but price wise are a few hundred dollars more. We have just gotten a new shipment of shimano tld 50's and they have actually updated them. we have the new models with power handles. if you need any more info email me from the contacts on my home page http://www.fishingtackleshop.com.au
PS, good luck with the ebook. hope it helps

I absolutley agree, i have found that when first putting a new website up, making sure it is finished and SEO'd for the correct content along with a few other important aspects gives real meaning to the phrase "first impressions last".
I have found better results when launching a new site if google finds the site through high ranking, quality backlinks, anchored to a specific keyword, before you add the new url to google. I submit the url and sitemap once i see the google robot in the site stats.
Listed and ranked #1 within a week is my record - was a uniquely relevant search term but this way (at the moment) its effective.

My advice in climbing the rankings is similar to getting indexed. In order to climb the rankings you again need other sites to link to you. In my mind this is the most important aspect of good SEO (search engine optimization). There are of course other factors, but what it largely comes down to in my experience is inbound links from other sites (relevant, highly ranked ones using the keywords you want to rank for to link to you ideally).

Another thing also, is to make sure that you up date content on your website on a regular basis, my rankings climbing higher all the time with this method also.
When your web page is being crawled, crawlers LOVE NEW CONTENT!
Cheers!

Hi Brian,
It is easy to create a Google sitemap using ezimerchant. Just click on Data Feeds and enable the Google Sitemap data feed (A $2.20 per month premium feature fee applies). Once you have done so, generate and publish. Then create a Google Webmaster Tools account and add your sitemap.
