I would like to propose a tag (or tags) which print the current time and date into the generate page, so that you can say Last Updated <date> etc and it will appear as last updated 3 March 2006 on the generated site

Should you do this then EVERY time you upload the site every page would get uploaded again because it would have changed!

Yes I understand, so you should only use it sensibly. Ie the front page.
Its at the users choice where it is used, it may be advantagious for some smaller sites or in the category design but not the product pages
