Hi there,

I only just discovered this forum last week and have been doing a lot of reading. What a great resource! I am currently building a classifieds website which will focus on a niche market in advertising and would like some advice. I'm still in the planning/design/specification phase and the site won't be ready for another 2-3 months. I am looking at different ways to market my website to boost traffic. I've done some reading up on Google AdWords and this is one of my options. My goal is to get as many people register on the site as possible and have them use the site on a regular basis. Some options which I am currently looking into are:

1) Corporate sponsorship: Try and line up a corporate sponsor who will sponsor the site by giving people who register some sort of freebie or voucher. This would be an incentive for new users to register. The offer would need to be attractive enough to be worthwhile for the user.

2) Referrals: Similarly to the registration incentive above, provide users with a freebie for every X people they refer who actually join the site.

3) Banner/Link exchanges with other sites.

Can anyong provide any feedback on the above strategies? Has anyone had any success with corporate sponsorship? In return, the corporate sponsor would receive free advertising on the website. This however would only be worthwhile to the company if website traffic is high. I'm new to all this so any advice would be appreciated.

Are there any other marketing/advertising tactics you could recommend? I've thought about other various methods, such as trying to get a feature article in a local newspaper, but this would only target a small area. I would like to target users at a national level.

I look forward to your reponse.

Kind regards,
Ozy

Hi again.

Sorry, just on the topic of Google AdWords. When I do a Google search for phrases relating to my business (or business name), there is often only 1-2 or sometimes no sponsored links on the right. Does this mean that if I was to bid the minimum amount for these keywords, my ad would be guaranteed a ranking on the first page?

Kind regards,
Ozy

Hi Ozy

I can comment on the Adwords.. If you only see one or two ads on the right hand side, you should be able to bid on those keywords and your ad would appear third (assuming your the third highest bidder)
